New photographs and information added
Today I added some photographs and valuable information most kindly supplied by the Roman boletologist Matteo Gelardi. New photographs are now seen under Xerocomus bubalinus, Xerocomus ichnusanus and Xerocomus persicolor. Mr. Gelardi sent me also three very interesting papers of his on those three species. I would suggest that you therefor take a look at the references. Very interesting and valuable information is that Mr. Gelardi found specimens of X. bubalinus with red dots in the flesh in the stipe base, a character that was so far known to be seen in X. communis and X. rubellus. The occurrence in X. bubalinus poses further problem of the field identification of those three species. As we may judge this is likely a very rare event as I has the chance to examine about 20 fruitbodies of X. bubalinus but never saw a trace of dots. Nonetheless it must not be underestimated when trying to distinguish those three species. As I mentioned X. communis, most boletologists are aware of the problem with the application of this name. The name Xerocomus engelii is now also available for use, should one preffers to keep this species in Xerocomus instead of moving it in Xerocomellus. Matteo Gelardi published the new combination needed for this, although its indexing in Index Fungorum and Mycobank was slightly delayed and you do not see it yet in their databases.
