Boletus L.
Recent molecular studies have shown that Boletus in its current circumscription is likely an artificial grouping and it is possible that it will be split at some point into smaller genera. Note that Boletus impolitus and Boletus depilatus for practical reasons are retained here, although there is strong evidence that they are closely related to Xerocomus subtomentosus and its allies.
Fruitbody large to medium sized, boletoid, without veil and ring. Stipe solid, with surface usually covered with granules or network. Flesh variously coloured, changing or not when exposed to air. Tubes easily separable from each other, not tearing apart. Pores usually small and rounded.
Boletus kluzakii Šutara & Špinar
Description
Cap up to 20 cm, at first hemispherical, later convex to flat-convex, dry, at first velvety, then smooth, whitish with pinkish tint, later almost entirely pink, in places red to reddish vinaceous, bruising reddish. Stipe cylindrical or club-shaped, often rooting, lemon yellow to yellow, sometimes discolouring to yellowish with brownish spots, at least in the upper part with fine network. Flesh in lemon yellow or yellowish, sometimes reddish or brownish in the stipe base, blueing when exposed to air. Tubes lemon yellow, later pale yellow with olivaceous tint, blueing when injured. Pores concolorous with the tubes, blueing when bruised. Smell not distinctive. Taste bitter. Spores 10–16 × 4.5–6.5 μm, ratio 1.7–3. Pileipellis trichodermium of interwoven septate hyphae of long cylindrical cells. Chemical reactions: hyphae of the flesh in the stipe base inamyloid with Melzer’s solution.
Habitat. Broadleaf or mixed forests, probably mycorrhizal with oaks (Quercus) but also found near pine (Pinus).
Distribution. So far known only from the Czech Republic.
Similarity. Probably might be confused with Boletus pseudoregius, which however has mild taste and its flesh blues predominantly in the cap. Compare also with Boletus pulchrotinctus that also has mild tasting flesh.
