T. panuoides

Tapinella E.-J. Gilbert

Two species are so far known in Europe. Wood inhabiting bolete allies recognized by their pleurotoid or crepidotoid fruitbodies with assymetrical or no stipe and forked gills.

Tapinella panuoides (Fr. : Fr.) E.-J. Gilbert

Description
Fruitbody crepidotoid, stem absent. Cap up to 10 cm, shell-shaped, cream, yellowish to brownish; cap base tomentose, whitish (f. panuoides) or violet (f. ionipus (Quél.) Šutara) . Gills initially cream or yellowish then brownish. Taste indistinct. Spores 4–6 × 3–4 μm.

Habitat. Tufted on stumps or trunks of coniferous trees, most often pines (Pinus).

Distribution. Throughout Europe.

Note. Forma ionipus is sometimes considered at variety level.
