Genera & Species

B. sphaerocephalus

Buchwaldoboletus Pilát

Two species are known in Europe. Saprotrophic on dead wood of conifers, one species probably mycoparasite on Phaeolus schweinitzii. Fruitbody boletoid. Cap dry. Pores and tubes yellow to olivaceous yellow. Flesh whitish or yellowish, unchanging or blueing slightly.

Buchwaldoboletus sphaerocephalus (Barla) Watling

Description
Fruitbodies rather robust. Cap up to 20 cm, at first hemispherical then expanding to convex, pale ochraceous, yellowish or almost white, velvety, distinctly dry even in wet weather, unchanging when bruised; cap margin inrolled for a long time. Stipe cylindrical or clavate, usually tapering towards the base, more or less smooth, almost concolorous with the cap. Flesh whitish to pale yellowish, slightly blueing when exposed to air or sometimes not blueing. Tubes at first bright yellow, then with somewhat olivaceous tint, blueing when exposed to air. Pores bright yellow, blueing when bruised. Smell not distinctive. Taste not distinctive. Spores 6.5–9.5 × 3–4.5 μm.

Habitat. Coniferous forests, associated with dead stumps of conifers, mostly pines (Pinus).

Distribution. Widespread in Europe, but rare throughout.

Similarity. Buchwaldoboletus sphaerocephalus could be possibly mistaken with Boletus radicans. The later however is a mycorrhizal fungus with distinctly bitter flesh and often with well developed network on the stipe.
